Bad Coding: Are Developers or Their Managers to Blame?

Code quality is suffering, and software developers and their Dev Manager don’t agree where the responsibility lies. A recent study by CAST Software found that enterprises are releasing apps with poor line code quality for “mission critical” functions, particularly in financial organizations that are managing sensitive, private data. There’s a clear communication issue between developers and their Dev Manager: developers are pressed to develop multi-code interfaces quickly with little time to focus on quality, while most Dev Managers say software integrity is the responsibility of the developers.

The solution? Establish ownership, says CAST’s Executive Vice President of Strategy and Analytics. He suggests assigning an Enterprise Architect the role of a Structural Quality Officer to oversee code quality.
